Recruitment of participants who are at other institutions that have ethical review boards is a complicated issue. After extensive consultation this REB has taken the following position;
1. Individuals at other institutions may be approached directly, if their contact information is available publicly.
2. Resources at that institution are not required to reach the person directly or indirectly for example via secretary such as forwarding emails and posting announcements.
3. The participant when approached must be informed how their contact info was obtained and why they are being contacted.
4. They must be told if their local ethics board would like to review it that they should inform the researcher who will then contact said board.
During the Winter semester of 2008 the Research Ethics Board hosted two educational seminars on the subject 'Web-based Research and Surveys'. Dr. Fuschia Sirois was the presenter for both of these seminars. Attached below is a copy of her power point presentation.
