Research:

Dr. Maev and his research team are a multidisciplinary group that consists of scientists and students from Physics, Engineering and Computer Science. We specialize in the development of new high frequency acoustic and acousto-optic imaging systems and conduct research in advanced principles and methods for the imaging and quantitative characterization of surface, sub-surface and bulk structures of the materials different nature, including metals, composite polymers, biomaterials etc.

All this research directions are developed under the umbrella of the University of Windsor Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research (IDIR) together with the Industrial Research Chair in Applied Solid State Physics and Material Characterization.

Activities of the new IDIR Institute, funded by the Ontario Government in 2008, include research to develop advanced systems and methods in the fields of acoustic microscopy, high-resolution non-destructive evaluation (NDE) in industrial and biomedical fields, ultrasonic sensors, nonlinear acoustics, new generation of array transducers, sensors and acousto-optics. The Institute also develops both hardware and software for image processing and high-speed 2-D and 3-D image generation and analysis.

The goals of Maev’s research team in both the Institute and the NSERC/Chrysler/University of Windsor Industrial Research Chair are: 

  • Generation of fundamental new knowledge in the science of quantitative non-destructive evaluation of materials through study of relationships between material properties and imaging phenomena, using principles of applied physics, physical acoustics, acousto-optics and solid state physics.
  • The investigation of physical mechanisms of new Gas Dynamic Spray Process (GDSP) based on nanoparticle feedstocks made by shear compaction method
  • Theoretical algorithms and experimental verification of mathematical and physical modelling for understanding key mechanisms of GDSP of two- and three-dimensional structures
  • Application of fundamental new knowledge to the development of commercial NDE procedures and equipment for rapid and accurate materials characterization
  • Education and development of highly qualified specialists in advanced materials characterization and imaging research, notably, in quantitative NDE technologies for advanced imaging techniques for materials and biomaterials study.
  • Creation and presentation of training programs in quantitative NDE technologies for advanced imaging procedures.
  • Facilitation of international cooperation in NDE technologies for advanced materials characterization, through collaborative research, technology transfer and development of international standards.
