Hula hooping, riddle solving, head bobbing and a ton of running – in a nutshell, September 28th, 2011 was day that more than thirty participants and twenty volunteers of the Odette Amazing Race won’t soon forget.
Based off the hit CBS television show of the same name, members of the Odette Commerce Society organized and ran their own game show. Given nothing more than a bag of clues and a few rules, ten teams of four students each were told to collect clues at different stations around the University campus to solve the ultimate riddle at the end of the race.
“When conceptualizing the event, we truly tried to think of a variety of different challenges; some physical, some mental and some based on team spirit,” said Jacob McCourt, Executive Vice President of the Odette Commerce Society and organizer of the event. “Also challenges that would put smiles on the faces of the participating teams like 'The Human Bobblehead'.”
Teams of four, some dressed in costumes, completed challenges as simple as transferring pebbles from one container to another using chopsticks to increasing the steps on a pedometer attached to their heads. The first team back completed the eight challenges around campus in about 75 minutes.
“To be honest, I think the most telling characteristic of a successful event is when you have to ask people to leave after the event is complete. Even sweaty, hot and in ridiculous costumes, some students just wouldn’t leave!” said McCourt.
Best Team Costume (and winners of $50 in Harvey’s Gift Cards) went to members of the Debate Team dressed as members of the Jersey Shore (Mike Ruffolo, Chris Webb, Alyssa Atkins and Ankur Karnik) and the Winning Team was that of Cody Dennis, Brian Suta and Drew Knebel.
Jacob had a final remark: “I think that this event wouldn’t have been successful without support of the Odette clubs. Cheers to them for their continued support.”
