1) What is Assurance of Learning (AOL)?

Assurance of Learning (AoL) is a service quality control process. 

Assurance of Learning (AoL) is a service quality control process.

To develop this systematic service quality control process, the first step is to define the learning goals of the Odette School of Business, programs. The next step is to align the courses and other teaching elements of the program with the goals. To gather evidence of student success achieving these goals a systematic evaluation is done.  Data is collected, analyzed and then changes to teaching content, methods and/or the AOL are discussed, approved and implemented by Odette’s Program Committees, according to the University of Windsor’s policies. 


2) Why undertake AOL?

Odette School of Business provides an educational service, funded by both the Province of Ontario and students’ tuition.  AOL learning goals are public commitments to both stakeholders to assure our graduates possess the competencies and technical knowledge which are essential to founding, growing and sustaining both successful businesses and non-profit services.  AOL testing provides evidence that Odette graduates meet or exceed their own expectations and the expectations  of our community of employers, the Province, and third party accrediting agencies.


3) Who benefits from AOL?

  1. Students know from the learning objectives of a program , the transformation they will undertake as they develop values, skills and gain technical knowledge. They also recognize different value systems and how values influence ethical business undertaking locally and globally.
     
  2. Instructors know how each course links into the entire program and every syllabus associates the course learning objectives with the learning goals of the program.  AOL is a powerful tool permitting instructors to clearly state what competencies students are expected to demonstrate and how they will test these competencies.
     
  3. Communities and in particular, employers know what to expect of each graduate they hire.  The learning goals of the program are a promise that Odette’s graduates possess not only technical knowledge but also understand how to apply their knowledge to sustain growing, successful businesses.


4) What are Odette’s Learning Goals for each program?

Assurance of Learning Goals
Graduates of Odette who meet a threshold level of accomplishment in the program learning goals possess intellectual skills, technical knowledge, and values needed to interact effectively in business environments.  Graduates can

  • work independently, lead teams, and effectively work in teams, as appropriate to the business situation
     
  • apply their technical knowledge to identify and analyze issues and identify solutions
     
  • initiate and undertake research
     
  • make and communicate sound, ethical business decisions, and
     
  • implement change to anticipate and react to economic and social events.


5) How is AOL testing done?

Instructors inform students on the course syllabus of exactly how the achievement of AOL learning goals/objectives will be tested.  Courses are sampled each semester, based on a formal testing schedule.  Only those learning goals/objectives taught in a course are tested.  In most cases the AOL test is a question embedded on an exam, a quiz, an assignment or a project.  In some cases the AOL test is a peer survey of accomplishment.  Instructors also inform students of how they are evaluated using the rubric for the learning goal/objective being tested.  To view the rubrics for any of Odette’s programs click here. 


6) What has been done so far?

  • Established Odette Program Level Goals and Rubrics developed
     
  • Workshops run at the Faculty and area level; individual consultations; Area meetings
     
  • Instructors identified which Program Level Goals their course would address, and chose assessments embedded within the existing courses, shared with students through course syllabi
     
  • Centre for Teaching and Learning reviewed assessments for AOL
     
  • Data collected and shared from AOL assessment results
     
  • Groups revising goals and rubrics based on feedback (ongoing enhancement of AOL Process)
