Systems and Network Availability
Computer systems require periodic downtime to do proper system backups and to perform other system maintenance tasks which cannot be done while users are accessing the system. Scheduled time is required to update network switching equipment, perform database maintenance, apply operating system updates, adjust security parameters, etc. in order to provide as much uninterrupted access to the computing resources as possible. This scheduled time is done during off-hours for most people.
Regular system maintenance hours are as follows:
Weekdays - 6 AM to 8 AM
Saturdays - 6 AM to 9 AM
Sundays - 6AM to noon
On any given day during these maintenance windows, access to the systems may be in one of two states: 1) available, ie. no maintenance is scheduled to be done on a particular system, and therefore is available for general use; 2) one or more systems are unavailable due to network and/or system maintenance. You are free to try to use the system, however you are doing so at your own risk. During this time, the network or systems may become unavailable or unstable without warning, and services which you expect during regular hours may not be available.
In addition to these regular maintenance hours, some systems have additional times when some or parts of the system are not available. On the main servers, time after midnight is used to do system and database backups. If you are a user of the components that are affected, you will not be able to access these systems until they are finished processing. After the backups are completed, the affected components are started again, ready for regular use at the end of the maintenance period as scheduled above. However, the systems may come down again during the maintenance window if additional work needs to be done.
