Soft Landing Program for New International Arrivals

Congratuations on your acceptance to the University of Windsor! To make your arrival as easy as possible, we have a program called "Soft Landing" for new international students. To ensure that your arrival is as simple as possible, please follow the steps below:

STEP 1: Determine how you will arrive in Windsor

Make sure to visit the Airport Welcome Booth when you arrive at Toronto's Pearson Airport

  • Airport Welcome Booth for International Students:

    At Pearson International Airport in Toronto:
    When you arrive at Toronto Pearson International Airport, the City of Toronto's welcome booth will be there to receive you! Please visit the International Students Welcome Booth in the Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 international arrivals area of Toronto Pearson airport.

    The booth is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day from August 15 to September 8, 2014.

    Come visit the booth to meet the friendly staff and:

    • collect a welcome package

    • make a free long distance call home to tell your loved ones that you have arrived safely in Toronto

    • get information and support related to your campus destination, public transportation, housing/accommodation, etc.

At Windsor International Airport:

Between August 25th and September 3rd volunteers will be welcoming you at the Windsor airport, to help you make arrangements for a taxi and answer any question you may have.

Make sure to stop by and say hi! They will be wearing University of Windsor volunteer t-shirts and a great smile.

There are a number of different options to arrive in Windsor:

From Toronto Pearson Airport: Air Canada provides connecting flights to Windsor international Airport. You may also take the Robert Q Airbus from Toronto-Pearson to Windsor. Please be aware that it takes approximately 4-5 hours to drive from Toronto to Windsor.

If you arrive through Toronto Pearson International Airport in the morning between August 15 and September 8, please visit the Student Welcome Booth after you pass through Security and Immigration. The staff at the booth will be able to provide you with information about Canada’s largest city and directions for your next stop whether that be sightseeing in the Toronto region or your connection to Windsor.

From Downtown Toronto: Regular bus and train service from downtown Toronto is provided by Greyhound Bus Lines and ViaRail. Please be aware that it takes approximately 4-5 hours to get to Windsor from Toronto.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport: Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, known by locals as Toronto Island Airport, is located in downtown Toronto. Porter Airlines provides daily service from Toronto to Windsor. Note that this option is not advised unless you will be staying in downtown Toronto prior to your arrival in Windsor.

Other Ports of Entry: Other major ports of entry in Canada include Vancouver and Montreal. Major Airlines in Canada include Air Canada, Westjet, and Porter Airlines. Please check the flight schedules to find the most convienent option for you to connect to Windsor.

STEP 3: Find initial accomodation in Windsor

If you have filled out the soft landing arrival form and arrive in Windsor outside of the university’s regular business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30AM-4:30PM) and require accommodation for the first night, we will arrange for one night’s free accommodation at the Holiday Inn Downtown Windsor. Please be aware that any additional nights of accommodation must be paid at your own expense.

Please note that During the Labour Day long weekend (Aug 30- Sep1st) we are open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Note:

  • Rooms are double occupancy and will be assigned by the staff of the hotel.
  • You may request a single room and pay an additional charge.
  • You may extend your stay with the hotel at the University of Windsor negotiated rate.

The hotel is situated on the city’s main street, Ouellette Avenue, with plenty of restaurants nearby and only a short walk to our riverfront parks.
