Digital History Research Assistant

University of Windsor


The Digital History Research Collaborative at the University of Windsor invites applications from qualified individuals for the position of Digital History Research Assistant. The Digital History Research Collaborative has an initiative entitled “Exploring Borders and Boundaries” that seeks to bring together distinct yet convergent digital history projects that explore how borders have shaped cultures and continue to shape how history has been told. Although the areas of research expertise is varied, the collective goal is to explore how emergent digital technologies can help us explore, recover, map, document, preserve, unearth, disseminate, and share historical knowledge related to geographical, political, and cultural borders and boundaries. Our work has a strong local focus, and these digital projects open up the processes of historical inquiry to undergraduate and graduate students, other scholars, and members of the general public. In this way, the Collaboration is also about breaking down borders between professors and students, scholarly publishing and public curiosity. The projects currently connected to this initiative are:


·         “Mapping the Spanish Republic of Letters, 1450-1650”

·         “Borderland Stories: A Student Conference on the Detroit River Borderland” (proceedings)

·         “Transcending Borders: Wilfred ‘Boomer’ Harding, Race, Athletics, and Courage in Chatham,         Ontario”

·         “Understanding the Huron/Wyandot Presence in the Detroit River Border Region”

The position: Digital History Research Assistant

Duration: 14 weeks

Dates: January 8-April 13, 2018

Hours:  15 hours a week

Rate of pay:  $35.00/hour plus 4% vacation pay


·         Consult with members of the Digital History Collaborative apropos potentially beneficial digital


·         Collaborate with faculty and graduate students in the planning of future projects and funding applications

·         Provide training for members of the Digital History Collaborative and graduate students in the use of open-source software appropriate for historical research (e.g. Omeka, Neatline)

·         Liaise between the Department of History and the Leddy Library Centre for Digital Scholarship


·         M.A. in public history, digital scholarship or equivalent, or a Master of Library and Information Science

·         Experience with digital history projects, digital archives, public history

·         Knowledge and experience with open-source software appropriate for historical projects
