Welcome to GLIER Organic Analysis Nutrient Laboratory (OANL)

Organic and Nutrient Analysis Lab

GLIER has the distinction of housing one of the few university-based environmental analytical laboratories in Canada accredited by the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA) to International Standards of Performance. 

The following method is accredited by CALA to the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Standard.

Organic Section

Since 1997, the Organic Analytical section has been accredited for Organochlorine Pesticides and PCB congeners from the Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation (CALA). We have conducted analytical tests for governmental agencies and educational institutions within North America and throughout the world.

We perform a wide range of analyses for organic pollutants such as Chlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) including planar & non-coplanar, OC Pesticides, PAHs, PBDEs, Dioxins/Furans and volatile Organic Halogens from environmental samples.

Nutrient Section

Our Nutrient Analysis section is a multi-users, central laboratory located in GLIER.

Water samples collected from aquatic bodies, including, lakes, rivers, natural ponds, and stormwater ponds, can be analyzed for the following parameters & tests:

Soluble Reactive Phosphate as Phosphorus, Total Dissolved Phosphate as Phosphorus, Total Phosphate as Phosphorus, Nitrate-Nitrite as Nitrogen, Nitrite as Nitrogen, Ammonia Nitrogen, TKN (HACH method), Chloride, Sulfate, Silica, Fluoride (HACH method)

Total Organic Carbon, Inorganic Carbon, Non-Purgeable Organic Carbon, Total Carbon, Total Nitrogen

Total Suspended Solid (TSS), Total Dissolved Solid (TDS), Alkalinity, pH, oil & grease

Chlorophyll a, Cyanopigments, Organic matter

Excitation Emission Matrices (EEMs).  The Horiba Aqualog is capable of generating a matrix file of excitation wavelength, emission wavelength and fluorescence intensity providing a unique fingerprint characteristic of the chemical components in the sample.  EEMs are typically generated on a filtered water sample within the same day of collection.  Using multivariate statistical approaches, the EEMs can be used in environmental applications related to tracking dissolved organic carbon species present in tributaries, water mixing zones, wetlands and other source signature profiles.

Agilent GC7890B coupled with 5977B Inert Plus MSD Turbo molecular pump with EI Extractor ion source and CI source with PCI & NCI acquisition Gas Chromatograph/Mass Selective Detector (GC/MSD). Mass range 1.6–1,050 amu. GC-MSD is controlled by Mass Hunter software to set instrument, develop methods, data analysis and building reports.

 

 

HP Gas Chromatograph/Mass selective Detector GC/MSD 6890/5973, capillary GC equipped with 7673 auto sampler, Low resolution, Electron ionization (EI), full-scan mode and selected ion monitoring mode (SIM) with quadrupole analyser, mass range 1.6 - 800 amu, operates PC (Windows) based data system (HP CHEMSTATION software).

Agilent Gas Chromatograph with micro ECD/FID Detectors, model Agilent 7890A - Capillary GC with auto sampler model 7683B, High sensitivity and low detection limits due to 10 times smaller detector zone volume. Highly efficient for electronegative compounds. The instrument operates by Agilent CHEMSTATION data analysis software.

GC/uECD /FID: model 6890 plus with 7683 auto sampler is equipped with micro Electron Capture & Flame Ionization Detectors from Agilent. The operating software is PC (Windows) based Agilent CHEMSTATION data analysis software.

GC/TOF Agilent Gas Chromatograph 6890N/Waters GCT Premier micro mass MS Technologies. Capillary GC, High Resolution MS with an elevating resolving power 7000 FWHM, accurate mass measurements, EI/MS & CI/MS with Time-of-flight (TOF) analyser, , operates with PC (Windows) based MassLynx software.

 

GC_TOF Agilent Gas Chromatograph Instrument

 

SMARTCHEM 170 Discrete Analyzer is an automated wet chemistry analyzer capable of performing analytical tests on up to 170 samples per hour. The analyzer determines nutrient concentrations in water and soil extracts using EPA approved methods. The Discrete analyzer is equipped with a cadmium module for nitrate analysis, fully automated and controlled by SMARTSTART software.

Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon Analyzer High-Sensitivity Model  (TOC-L) with ASI-L  Autosampler effectively oxidize all types of organic molecules in an aqueous sample by combustion and catalytic oxidation followed by  Non-Dispersive Infrared Detector (NDIR) detection.

SHIMADZU Total Nitrogen (TN) Module with TOC is capable of analyzing TOC and TN in a sample simultaneously.

SHIMADZU SSM-5000A is a Solid Sample capable of measuring TOC  in solid samples.

Horiba Aqualog is a fully automated spectrofluorometer controlled by AQUALOG spectroscopy software. It provides simultaneous acquisition and measurements of fluorescence and absorbance from a sample such as Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM), Chlorophyll and other tests.
