St. Denis Athletic and Community Centre
The Department of Athletics will be hosting an "Olympic Send Off" Reception on Friday, July 20th from 11:45am to 1pm in the multi-purpose room of the St. Denis Centre for Lancer alum and Canadian Olympian Melissa Bishop.
She is currently the #1 ranked Canadian female in the 800 metres and is set to compete for Canada later this summer in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, England.
Bishop secured an Olympic berth after earning a silver medal in the 800 metres at the 2012 Canadian Track and Field Trials in Calgary in late June.
The 23- year- old native of Eganville, Ont., had already ran the Olympic "A" standard earlier in the summer at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon and only needed a top-three finish at the Canadian Track Trials.
Former Lancer track & field great Dr. Andrea Steen will be a guest speaker at the event on Friday. Steen is the last female Lancer athlete to compete at the Summer Olympic Games in 1984 in Los Angeles in the 400m Hurdles. O'Brian Gibbons and Peter Fonseca also competed for Canada in 1996 in Atlanta.
Friday's Olympic Send-Off Reception is open to the public and will begin promptly at noon in the St. Denis Centre's Mulit-Purpose Room.
