Accountant '10' in the Department of Financial Accounting and Reporting (Temporary for approximately 9 months)

The Accountant will assist the Controller in all accounting and financial reporting aspects of the University by ensuring the accurate, consistent and appropriate compilation and analysis of financial data for operating, ancillary and capital fund accounting functions of the University. The incumbent will also be responsible for overseeing the bank reconciliation functions and together with the Controller and the Treasury Accountant, assist with banking-related activities. It is responsible for the general ledger accounts to support the accounting and reporting for the University.


1. Administer the financial accounting and related internal control policies and procedures and assists with any other accounting requirements as requested by the Controller.

2. Responsible for the Journal Entry review and post process.

3. Prepares journal entries for posting by the Controller and budget to actual analysis where required.

4. Prepares reconciliations monthly including internal sales/expenses balancing reports and interfund reconciliations.

5. Assists the Controller with ad hoc, capital and research report preparation and audits.

6. Coordinates, prepares and/or assists the Controller with various financial surveys and reports.

7. Coordinates the month-end process in consultation with the Controller.

8. Provides financial management and reporting advice and support to Business Units across the University and within Finance itself.

9. Provides oversight of the general accounts receivable for the University including the collection of receivables.

10. Other duties and special projects as assigned.


The successful candidate will possess:

• Undergraduate degree in Business or related field

• Professional Accounting designation or significant (5 years’) experience in accounting and reporting

• Experience in a financial field including: financial and accounting reporting skills, analysis experience, and knowledge of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)

• Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, including knowledge of financial and data analysis tools such as excel

• A proven ability to interact well with others at all levels of the organization along with the ability to exercise tact, diplomacy and discretion at all times

• Ability to exercise confidentiality in all matters

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to be detail oriented

• Ability to be highly self-motivated and directed

• Strong customer service orientation

• Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively in a team-work environment

• Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, multi-stakeholder environment

• Highly proficient with computer applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

As per schedule `A' - Unifor 2458 FT Collective Agreement
