HackWe Code Jam

1st Hack-a-Thon Windsor-Essex
Saturday-Sunday January 19-20 2013
University of Windsor

The HackWE challenge is more of a creative exercise than a problem to solve.

For example: A web application that uses the HTML5 Geolocation API in conjunction with the city's database of heritage sites to create a "walking tour". In a participant team solution, I'd expect to see the core functionality of this application demonstrated (a web page showing current location and a list of nearby heritage sites).  If time permitted a team could extend this by leveraging Google Maps to create a proposed walking route, and link to a Wikipedia page about the heritage site if it exists.

The rest of the city's Open Data that participants can use to craft various innovative apps will be revealed at kick-off.
Plus!  The event will feature local tech employers as judges, speakers and facilitators, and the prize is a dinner at the Windsor Club with one of our judges—the president of a large local IT company.

We invite applications for a 24-hour computer coding competition called hackWE hosted by WEtech Alliance, Ontario Trillum Foundation, Hackforge, City of Windsor, AlphaKOR, St. Clair College and University of Windsor.

The first weekend code jam will put five teams of three students against one another to develop an innovative application using the City of Windsor’s OPEN DATA.

Saturday Morning Kick-Off: Arrive at the University at 9am– 3105 LAMBTON TOWER.
Teams assigned.  Instructions given. Each team has an embedded Hackforge facilitator.

Saturday Night: Participants will program through the night.  Food and beverages provided.

Sunday: Programming continues through Sunday.  After lunch, teams present their innovative apps to a panel of friendly judges that include local industry, government and community partners.

PRIZE: Winning team invited to dinner with execs of local tech company @ swanky restaurant
