Alumni Association and University sign MOU

University President Alan Wildeman and ALumni Association Sue WilliamsThe University and the Alumni Association formalized their long standing partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).    “The memo of understanding outlines how we can continue to work together to reach our collective goals.”  wrote University President Alan Wildeman in the Spring 2011 edition of the VIEW Magazine.  “This agreement builds our future and strengthens the commitment we have always had to focus on our students - past, present and future.”

The MOU recognizes that the Alumni Association represents a growing, global community of Alumni, with a valuable institution-wide perspective which can support the University’s mission.  “The association has always been supportive of the values and mission of the university” said Sue Williams BHK '85, MHK '88, President of the Alumni Association. “This gave us an opportunity to formalize the partnership that has always existed.  Our board is always looking for ways to further support our students and celebrate the success of our alumni.”

Donation to cancer research made in
memory of son

In their son Kevin’s honour, Donna and Dave Couvillon have made a $20,000 donation to the lab ofSiyaram Pandey, a professor inBiochemistry.  Dr. Pandey devotes most of his time to researching how certain natural compounds kill cancer cells. Their donation was officially announced at a ceremony in the Toldo Health Education building on what would have been Kevin’s 27th birthday.

The couple—both UWindsor alumni and retired educators, first heard of Dr. Pandey when they read an article in The Windsor Star about a team of his students who discovered that a water-based formula they developed from dandelion roots was effective in killing commercially available lines of cancer cells.

Their findings were published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.  “It feels like the right thing to do,” said Dave, who earned a BA in History in 1973. “Kevin fought so hard and he would want us to fight it too.”

"We were really impressed about the way Dr. Pandey spoke about his students.  He said 'My students are second to none.'" said Donna, who earned a BA in Psychology in 1973.
